Taxable line items on invoices
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Choose which lines on an invoice are taxed and how the tax rate is set. The rate can be a fixed rate, a US location-based rate, or the rate from QuickBooks Online.
Sales tax settings
Tax is calculated only when sales tax is turned on for your company in Company settings > Services & Materials > Tax. There, you also set:
- Tax method: Fixed rate or US location-based. With US location-based, Cinderblock calculates the rate from the job address. If there’s no job address, it uses the customer’s address, and if there’s no customer address, your company address.
- Tax name: The label your customers see for tax on the invoice PDF and web link, such as “Sales tax” or “VAT.”
If Cinderblock is connected to QuickBooks Online, your tax rate comes from QuickBooks Online. You can’t change the tax method or rate in Cinderblock.
For setup steps, see Taxable line items on estimates.
Choose which lines are taxed
Select … next to a line, then select:
- Make taxed to apply tax to the line.
- Make non-taxed to remove tax from the line.
A taxed line shows a T next to its Amount.
Changing a line’s tax setting affects only that line. The item in Services & Materials doesn’t change.
Default tax setting for new lines
Items added from Services & Materials use their saved tax setting. Custom lines start untaxed. Use Make taxed to tax them.
Changing an item’s tax setting in Services & Materials doesn’t change lines already on your invoices.
To choose whether new items you create in Services & Materials are taxed by default, see Taxable line items on estimates.
Change the tax rate on an invoice
- Open the invoice.
- Select the settings icon on the right side of the invoice.
- Enter the rate in Tax.
- Select Save changes.
To return to the rate from your company settings, select Load default.
With US location-based, the invoice’s settings also show the address used to calculate the rate. You can change the address there.
If Cinderblock is connected to QuickBooks Online, you can’t change the rate on an invoice.
Tax on sent and paid invoices
Changing which lines are taxed, or the tax rate, is an edit to the invoice. On an Open, Partially paid, or Paid invoice, select Save changes in the confirmation when you save.
Important: Changing tax can affect an invoice’s balance and status. For example, adding tax to a Paid invoice can create an outstanding balance and change its status. If the new total is less than the amount already paid, the invoice stays Paid and is marked Overpaid. For details, see Create and edit an invoice.
If your customer signed the invoice, saving changes to tax settings removes the signature.
