Invoice statuses
Last updated: November 3, 2026
Every invoice has one status. This article explains what each status means and how it changes.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | The invoice is saved but not yet sent. New invoices are saved as Draft. |
| Open | The invoice is ready to be paid and no payment has been made. |
| Partially paid | Some of the invoice has been paid. |
| Paid | The invoice is paid in full. |
| Canceled | The invoice was canceled. |
How payments change the status
An invoice’s payment status depends on its remaining balance. Recording a payment, or editing an invoice in a way that changes its balance, updates the status to match.
To change a Paid invoice’s status, you must first remove its payments. When all payments are removed, the invoice returns to Open.
Change an invoice’s status
You can change an invoice’s status to Draft, Open, or Canceled. Canceled invoices can be reopened.
Past due
Past due isn’t a status. An Open or Partially paid invoice is past due once its due date has passed, and it keeps its status. You can filter your invoices by Past due. See Invoice due dates.
