How do customers pay an invoice?

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Customers can pay invoices online by credit card or bank transfer using the invoice’s web link. Here’s how the payment process works and what happens after a payment.

Before your customer can pay

  • Online payment requires a connected payment provider and at least one payment method turned on in Payment settings. For details, see Invoice payment settings.
  • If both Credit card payments and ACH payments are off, the web link shows the balance without a Pay Now button. You can still record payments yourself. For details, see Record a payment on an invoice.
  • Draft, Open, and Partially paid invoices can be paid online. Paid and Canceled invoices can’t. For details, see Invoice statuses.
  • If the invoice requires a signature, your customer must sign before paying online. For details, see How do customers sign an invoice?

Open the payment page

Your customer opens the invoice’s web link from the invoice email, from a link you share, or by selecting Pay invoice on the invoice PDF. For details, see Send an invoice.

On the web link, your customer selects Pay Now. The Pay Invoice page opens. To go back to the invoice, they select View invoice.

Pay the invoice

On the Pay Invoice page, your customer:

  1. Chooses the amount under Payment amount.

    • If Partial payments is on, they choose to pay the remaining balance or select Pay a different amount and enter an amount. The amount can’t be more than the remaining balance.
    • If Partial payments is off, the payment amount is the remaining balance.
  2. Chooses Credit Card or Bank transfer under Payment method.

Only the methods you’ve turned on appear.

  3. Enters their payment details.

    • Credit Card: Card number, Expiration, CVV, Name on card, and Postal code.
    • Bank transfer with Sola Payments: Account type, Routing number, Account number, and Name on account.
    • Bank transfer with Stripe: Name on account and Email.
  4. Reviews the payment summary and selects the pay button.

For a bank transfer with Stripe, they select Continue to pay, then follow the prompts to sign in to their bank and authorize the payment.

A confirmation message appears, and your customer returns to the invoice’s web link.

Processing fee on card payments

If you’ve set a processing fee, it applies to credit card payments only. Bank transfers have no fee.

  • Your customer sees the fee on the Credit Card option and in the payment summary, along with the total charge, before paying.
  • A processing fee is added for each credit card payment, including partial payments.

For fee setup, see Invoice payment settings.

What happens after your customer pays

  • Credit card: The payment and the invoice status update right away. The status changes to Partially paid if a balance remains or Paid if the invoice is paid in full.
  • Bank transfer: The invoice status updates right away, but the payment remains pending until your customer’s bank completes the transfer.

Important: A Partially paid or Paid status doesn’t mean a bank transfer has cleared. If the transfer fails, Cinderblock emails you.

  • Your customer receives a payment receipt by email.
  • The invoice’s web link shows Payment history, with each payment and a Receipt link to its payment receipt.
  • Cinderblock emails you when a payment is made.

Online payments can be refunded but not deleted. For details, see Record a payment on an invoice.
