Invoice payment settings
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Payment settings control how your customers can pay an invoice online: by credit card, by bank transfer (ACH), in full or in part, and whether credit card payments include a processing fee. Set company-wide defaults in Company settings, or change the settings on individual invoices.
Connect a payment provider
To accept online payments, connect a payment provider: Stripe or Sola Payments (formerly Cardknox). Your company uses one payment provider at a time.
- Go to Company settings > Integrations.
- Next to the provider you want, select Connect.
Until a provider is connected, Payment settings shows only a prompt to connect one. Once a provider is connected, Payment settings names it and links to Integrations, where you manage the connection.
Payment settings
The same settings appear in your company’s defaults and on each invoice.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Credit card payments | When on, your customer can pay online by credit card. |
| ACH payments | When on, your customer can pay online by bank transfer (ACH). |
| Partial payments | When on, your customer can pay a different amount instead of the full remaining balance. When off, your customer pays the full remaining balance. |
| Processing fee | A percentage added to credit card payments. See Processing fee. |
If both Credit card payments and ACH payments are off, your customer can’t pay the invoice online. You can still record payments yourself. For details, see Record a payment on an invoice.
Your customer pays from the invoice’s web link. For what your customer sees, see How do customers pay an invoice? If the invoice requires a signature, your customer must sign before paying online. For details, see How do customers sign an invoice?
Processing fee
The processing fee applies only to credit card payments. Bank transfers have no fee.
- Enter the fee as a percentage in Processing fee. The maximum is 3%.
- The fee is calculated as a percentage of the credit card payment and added to the amount your customer pays.
- Your customer sees the fee before paying.
- Cinderblock adds the fee to the invoice as a line item.
Choose the item used for the fee
- Go to Company settings > Services & Materials > Special items.
- Under Item for processing fee, choose the item from your Services & Materials.
If you don’t choose an item, Cinderblock uses a one-time item for the fee. A one-time item doesn’t sync with QuickBooks as a recognized item.
Default payment settings for new invoices
- Go to Company settings > Invoices > General.
- Under Payment settings, change the settings you want.
- Select Update.
New invoices start with these settings, including invoices created from an estimate. Changing a default doesn’t change existing invoices.
Note: When you copy an invoice, the copy keeps the original invoice’s payment settings.
Change the payment settings on one invoice
-
Open the invoice.
-
Select the settings icon (gear) on the right of the invoice.
-
Under Payment settings, change the settings you want.
-
Select Save changes. On a new invoice, select Save invoice.
The changes apply only to this invoice.
You can change payment settings on an invoice in any status. Changes to a sent invoice take effect immediately on its existing web link. Payments already made aren’t affected.
