Cancel or delete an invoice
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Cancel an invoice when your customer no longer needs to pay it but you want to keep a record of it. Delete an invoice to remove it permanently. Neither action notifies your customer.
Cancel or delete?
| Cancel | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| The invoice | Stays in Cinderblock with the Canceled status | Is removed permanently |
| Your customer’s web link | Still works and shows Canceled. Your customer can’t pay the invoice. | No longer shows the invoice |
| Undo | Choose another status | Can’t be undone |
Cancel an invoice
To cancel an invoice, open it and select Canceled from the status menu at the top right of Invoice details. The change applies right away.
You can cancel Draft and Open invoices. A Paid or Partially paid invoice can’t be canceled while it has payments. Delete or refund its payments first. When no active payments remain, the invoice returns to Open and you can cancel it.
A canceled invoice stays Canceled if you edit it. To reopen it, choose another status.
Delete an invoice
- Open the invoice.
- Select the more options menu (⋮) at the top right of the invoice.
- Select Delete invoice.
- Confirm the deletion.
Important: Deleting an invoice is permanent and can’t be undone. Your customer can no longer view the invoice from its web link.
Invoices you can’t delete
You can delete Draft, Open, and Canceled invoices, including signed invoices, as long as they have no payments recorded.
If the only payments on an invoice are manual payments you recorded, delete those payments first. You can then delete the invoice.
Payments made through a payment integration, such as Stripe or Sola, can be refunded but not deleted. A refunded payment stays on the invoice, so the invoice can’t be deleted, even after a refund. Cancel it instead to keep its payment history.
