How do customers sign an invoice?
Last updated: October 30, 2026
If you require a signature on an invoice, your customer signs it through the invoice’s web link before they can pay online. They don’t need to sign in to Cinderblock.
Require a signature
Require signature is under Signature settings.
- For new invoices: Go to Company settings > Invoices > General, turn on Require signature, and select Update.
- For an individual invoice: Open the invoice, select the settings icon (gear) on the right of the invoice, turn on Require signature, and select Save changes.
How your customer signs
- Your customer opens the invoice’s web link, from the invoice email, a link you shared, or the invoice PDF.
- They select Sign to authorize.
- They enter their Full name and Email. If the customer’s profile has a primary email, Email is filled in.
- They select the checkbox to confirm they’re authorized to sign the invoice and agree that their electronic signature is legally binding.
- They select Sign.
- They select Pay Now to go to the payment page, or Done.
The invoice’s web link and PDF show the customer’s signature. Signing doesn’t change the invoice’s status.
When your customer can sign
Sign to authorize appears only when Require signature is on, and only on Draft, Open, Partially paid, and Paid invoices.
A Draft invoice hasn’t been sent, but if your customer already has its web link, for example from a PDF you downloaded and shared, they can sign and pay it.
When Require signature is on, your customer must sign before they can pay on the web link. You can still record a payment yourself in Cinderblock without a signature.
If the invoice PDF includes the ‘view online’ banner, its button opens the web link. The button is Pay invoice while the invoice is unpaid and isn’t canceled, and View invoice otherwise. If a signature is required, your customer signs on the web link before paying.
What you see when your customer signs
A signed invoice shows a Signed badge next to its status.
Edit a signed invoice
Important: Saving changes to line items, Public note, Terms & Conditions, attachments, tax settings, discount, or cost plus removes the customer’s signature. Your customer must sign the updated invoice again before they can pay on the web link.
Cinderblock doesn’t automatically notify your customer that they need to sign again. To let them know, send the invoice again or share its web link. If the invoice is already paid, Sign to authorize also reappears on its web link after the signature is removed.
Changes to Salesperson, PO number, Customer reference, the linked job, or a line’s Cost don’t affect the signature.
