Create and edit a customer
Last updated: November 3, 2026
A customer holds a person’s or company’s name, contact details, addresses, and notes. Each customer can have multiple addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Their jobs, appointments, estimates, and invoices are kept with them.
Create a customer
-
Select Customers > New customer, or select Create new > Customer.
-
Enter a First name, Last name, or Company name.
-
Add any other details you have, such as an address, email address, phone number, tags, or Customer notes.
-
Select Create customer.
The new customer’s profile opens.
All other details are optional and can be added later. You don’t need to choose whether the customer is a person or a company.
Note: A customer without an email address can’t receive notifications.
If you cancel after entering details, you’re asked to confirm before they’re discarded.
Create a customer from a job or invoice
You can also add a new customer while you’re creating a job or an invoice. The customer is saved to your customers, and you return to the job or invoice with the new customer selected. See Create and edit a job and Create and edit an invoice.
Edit a customer
- Open the customer.
- Next to the customer’s name, open Edit Customer.
- Change the First name, Last name, Company name, Address, Email address, Phone number, or Customer notes.
- Select Update customer.
A customer must keep at least one name. If you cancel with unsaved changes, you’re asked to confirm before they’re discarded.
Add email addresses and phone numbers
- Open the customer.
- Select Edit next to Email or Phone number.
- Change an existing entry, or select + New Email or + New Phone to add another.
- Select Update.
A phone number can include a country code and an extension. An invalid email address or an incomplete phone number isn’t saved until you correct it.
On the customer’s profile, select Show more to see additional email addresses and phone numbers.
When you send an email, the primary email address is selected by default, and you can choose a different one.
Add addresses
- Open the customer.
- Select Edit next to Address.
- Enter the address. Billing address line 1, City, and Postal Code are required. Address line 2 and State are optional.
- Save the address.
Where possible, Cinderblock fills in the address from Google address data, so in many cases you only need to enter the first line.
The first address becomes the customer’s primary billing address.
To add another address, select Edit next to Address again, then select + New Address in Manage Addresses.
Label, delete, or make an entry primary
In the editor for email addresses, phone numbers, or addresses, open the menu on an entry, then:
- Select Add label to give the entry an optional descriptor, such as Office or Mobile.
- Select Make primary to make a non-primary entry the primary one. Making an address primary makes it the billing address.
- Select the delete option, such as Delete phone, to remove the entry. If you delete the primary entry, the next entry becomes the primary one.
Sub-customers
A sub-customer belongs to another customer, called its parent customer. For example, a property management company can be the parent customer, with the companies it manages as its sub-customers. Sub-customers are a QuickBooks Online concept, and Cinderblock supports syncing them.
Merge customers
To merge a customer with another customer, open the customer’s more options menu and select Merge customer. Merging isn’t available when QuickBooks Online is active, and parent customers and sub-customers can’t be merged.
