How to estimate tile and boxes

  1. Choose straight, running bond, diagonal, or herringbone layout.
  2. Enter actual tile length and width, then add the non-overlapping rectangular sections you will cover. Deduct excluded areas from their own sections.
  3. Choose Tiles per box or Coverage per box and enter the corresponding package information.
  4. Review grout-joint width and waste in Material settings & waste, then read the rounded box quantity.

Tile count and box coverage

The repeated tile module includes the tile dimensions and joint spacing. It gives an approximate tile count across the measured surface. In tiles-per-box mode, the calculator rounds the waste-adjusted tiles to full boxes. In coverage-per-box mode, the package’s stated area controls the box count.

The purchased tile coverage result excludes grout when it is derived from tile dimensions. A joint-inclusive module and a box’s tile-only area are different measurements; use the supplier’s labeling consistently.

Allow for the layout you will install

Pattern choices suggest an editable waste allowance. They do not solve edge cuts, offcut reuse, or a detailed herringbone layout. Herringbone requires rectangular tiles with length greater than width. Use this for floors, backsplashes, or wall areas, then check product suitability and the actual cutting layout. The calculator supports US and metric measurements; it does not estimate adhesive or grout quantities.

Keep the material allowance with the job

Use the quantity estimate to check supplier costs before you price the work.

Cinderblock keeps estimates, invoices, notes, and files with the job. The Build plan adds job costing from labor, materials, purchase orders, and manually entered costs. Calculator inputs do not transfer into Cinderblock automatically.

Tile questions

Use the packaging information you have. Coverage-per-box mode uses the stated installed coverage to determine boxes; tiles-per-box mode uses the calculated tile quantity and pieces in a box.

Yes. You can edit joint width in Material settings & waste. This affects the repeated module used for approximate tile quantities.

No. The diagram illustrates the pattern, and the waste setting is an allowance. Exact cuts and offcut reuse are not optimized.

No. This calculator estimates tile and boxes. Estimate setting materials separately using the selected product’s coverage.
