How to calculate flooring packages

Add each room or non-overlapping rectangular floor section. Deduct exclusions from the section they belong to, and use the coverage printed on the actual flooring carton.

Choose a straight, running bond, diagonal, or herringbone layout. Open Material settings & waste to review the allowance and actual plank dimensions. The pattern can suggest an allowance, but you can change it to match the layout you intend to install.

Read the package count first

The calculator totals net floor area, adds waste, divides by package coverage, and rounds up to whole packages. It also estimates plank count from plank length and width and reports the coverage purchased in full cartons.

Package coverage controls the order quantity. The approximate plank count is a separate area-based check, not a board-by-board arrangement or a guarantee that offcuts will fit elsewhere.

Use this for general plank-flooring takeoffs

This page focuses on carton coverage for plank products, such as the hardwood or vinyl product you have selected. Verify that the chosen product permits the selected layout. Herringbone requires rectangular planks with length greater than width.

For laminate-specific planning, including recorded installation direction and optional underlayment rolls, use the laminate flooring calculator. For tile dimensions, joints, and tile boxes, use the tile calculator. This tool supports US and metric measurements but does not optimize cuts, stagger, or minimum end lengths.

Keep the material allowance with the job

Use the quantity estimate to check supplier costs before you price the work.

Cinderblock keeps estimates, invoices, notes, and files with the job. The Build plan adds job costing from labor, materials, purchase orders, and manually entered costs. Calculator inputs do not transfer into Cinderblock automatically.

No. It estimates packages, approximate planks, and purchased coverage. Use supplier pricing and your labor allowance separately.

Carton count uses the package coverage you enter; approximate planks use actual plank dimensions. Check that both sets of product information refer to the same flooring.

This is a general plank-package takeoff. The laminate page adds optional underlayment-roll coverage and records installation direction, with laminate-specific planning guidance.
