How to plan fence materials
Choose privacy, spaced picket, shadowbox, or board-on-board. Enter fence height, actual board width, purchased board length, and the spacing or overlap appropriate to that style. Set maximum post spacing, then add fence runs.
Under each run’s Connections & gate opening, enter one gate width and its distance from the run’s start. Connect consecutive runs when they share a corner. Closed-perimeter mode in the material settings requires at least three connected runs and also shares the last corner with the first.
Understand posts, bays, and boards
Gates split a run into spans. Each span is divided into bays at or below the entered maximum spacing. Results distinguish end, intermediate, shared-corner, and gate posts, and report the largest actual bay. Check that the rail stock is long enough to span it.
Privacy and spaced-picket layouts count boards on one face. Shadowbox counts staggered boards on two faces. Board-on-board counts alternating base and cover boards on one side using the entered overlap; it is not an automatic doubling of a privacy fence.
Optional post-hole concrete
Enter hole diameter, depth, actual square-post width, and concrete mix yield per bag. The calculation deducts post displacement from cylindrical holes, applies waste, and rounds to bags.
This is a material estimate, not a determination of post spacing, hole depth, or structural suitability. It supports one gate per run and does not handle branched intersections or supply gate leaves, hardware, caps, or fasteners. Board cuts and offcut reuse are not optimized. US and metric modes are available.
Keep the material allowance with the job
Use the quantity estimate to check supplier costs before you price the work.
Cinderblock keeps estimates, invoices, notes, and files with the job. The Build plan adds job costing from labor, materials, purchase orders, and manually entered costs. Calculator inputs do not transfer into Cinderblock automatically.
