How to estimate gravel

Add each non-overlapping area as a rectangle or circle. Enter length and width for rectangles, or diameter for circles, and deduct excluded areas. Set the installed depth and choose the material label.

Enter the supplier’s bulk density. Selecting crushed stone, pea gravel, or another product records the material; it does not supply a universal density. Review the waste or compaction ordering allowance in the material settings.

Cubic yards and tons measure different things

Net volume is area × depth. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. The ordering allowance raises that volume, and the entered bulk density converts it to estimated weight.

In US mode, estimated short tons equal cubic feet × pounds per cubic foot ÷ 2,000. Results show net and purchase weight separately. Metric display uses cubic meters and metric tonnes, so confirm the unit your supplier quotes.

Use a product-specific density

Use this to plan a gravel path, driveway layer, or landscape section with a known depth. Moisture, grading, and compaction affect bulk density. The allowance is a volume uplift, not a laboratory compaction factor or a selection of the correct installed depth. Confirm the density, delivery increments, and site requirements before placing an order.

Keep the material allowance with the job

Use the quantity estimate to check supplier costs before you price the work.

Cinderblock keeps estimates, invoices, notes, and files with the job. The Build plan adds job costing from labor, materials, purchase orders, and manually entered costs. Calculator inputs do not transfer into Cinderblock automatically.

Gravel questions

No. The material selection is a label. Enter the supplier’s bulk density for the product and condition you expect to receive.

US mode uses short tons of 2,000 lb. Metric mode displays metric tonnes. Confirm the unit used on the supplier quote.

Yes. Choose Circle for that section and enter its diameter, not its radius.

No. It increases the volume by the percentage you enter. Confirm the appropriate ordering allowance and installed depth for the actual product and job.
